What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen in Abu Dhabi?

If your passport is lost or stolen in Abu Dhabi the following procedures must be followed:

• If your passport has been stolen (not just lost), you should report the theft to the nearest police station.

• Report the loss to the Investigation Section (on the 1st floor) of the Abu Dhabi Immigration Department on Al Saada Street (number 19 on the attached map). If you are visiting Abu Dhabi, you should take with you a copy of your passport (if you do not have a copy, the Embassy may be able to assist you). If you are resident in Abu Dhabi, in addition to the passport copy, you should take with you a letter from your sponsor stating that he is not holding your passport (specimen available in immigration department), a copy of your company’s establishment card and their trade license.

• The Immigration Department will provide you with a preliminary loss report and instructions to advertise the loss in a local newspaper. This report needs to be stamped by the Civil Court, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Sharia Court (all located in Sharia Court Complex, behind Carrefour in the old airport road ‘Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street’ No2) and the Co-ordination Section of the Security Affairs Administration, located in Madinat Khalifa Police Station. This procedure may take some time but unfortunately, under UAE regulations, it is compulsory.

• After receiving all of the stamps and advertising the loss in a local newspaper, you should return to the Immigration Department along with a copy of the newspaper article. You will then receive two certificates addressed "To Whom It May Concern Passport Loss Certificate". One certificate needs to be included with your passport application form. The second will need to be submitted to Immigration once you have received your new passport.

• Complete the passport application form C1 (C2 if under 16) and the LS01 form.  Both of these forms are attached or available on the website, however you will Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them.  Bring these forms, with two passport photographs, to the Consular Section of the Embassy (open from 8am – 1pm,Sunday – Thursday).  It is important to do this as soon as possible as this will reduce the risk of someone stealing your identity or attempting to enter the UK using your passport.  We will then cancel your old passport and issue you with a new one within ten working days.  The cost of your new passport will be AED833 for a 32 page passport, AED1008 for a 48 page passport of AED532 if under 16 years old.

• Once the passport has been issued, you will need to return to the Immigration Department with the new passport and the second "To Whom It May Concern Passport Loss Certificate". The Immigration Department will then issue you with an out pass, if you are in Abu Dhabi on a visit visa, or re-issue your residence permit if you are a resident in Abu Dhabi.

Please Note: Abu Dhabi Immigration will only issue an out pass if you entered the UAE in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. If you entered in any other Emirate, such as Dubai, you will need to go to the Immigration Department of that particular Emirate to obtain the out pass. Similarly, residents will need to go to the Emirate in which their original residence permit was issued.

What if I later find a passport I have reported lost or stolen?

If overseas, you should return it to the nearest British Embassy as soon as possible and complete recovery form R01.  If you are in the UK you should return your passport to the nearest Identity and Passport Service Office.

Once you report your passport as lost or stolen, the passport is electronically canceled and you are not able to use it as legal proof of identity, nationality or for any other legal purposes.  You must not use it to travel, as this may cause the passport to be impounded by the Immigration Service at a UK port or airport and, if attempting to travel overseas, you could face deportation or arrest.  You must also not use it as a means of identification, as this may be detected as a potentially fraudulent act.
